How Coaching Fits Your Body Composition Scan Program

Your coach, your check-ins, your numbers

The scan is how coaching at Aspire is measured. At your first visit Olivia Mague, BS Kinesiology and Exercise Science, runs the Styku scan and debriefs you on body fat, lean mass and circumference. Brent Mague, MBA, ISSA Weight Management Specialist, uses that baseline in your goal-setting session, and Jillian Harrell, MS, RD, LDN, sets protein targets from it. The result is a plan built on your numbers, delivered through our weight loss coaching packages.

Progress is checked at scheduled check-ins, in person or by video, and you are rescanned on the same Styku unit so the trend is real rather than noise. If lean mass is falling or the scale has stalled while circumference keeps dropping, your coach adjusts protein, training or program pacing before you lose ground. Where a scan trend raises a medical question, we route it to Impact Health Network licensed physicians through a telehealth visit we arrange. See the full journey in how it works at Aspire Trim.

What Is a Styku 3D Body Composition Scan?

Optical scanning, not DEXA

A Styku scan is a non-invasive optical measurement. You stand on a rotating platform in fitted clothing while an infrared sensor captures your body surface in 30 to 40 seconds. It builds a 360 degree model and reports body fat, lean mass and 33 measurements in under 2 minutes, with no radiation.

Styku is optical, not DEXA, yet research shows high concordance with DXA for fat mass and fat-free mass. It excels at tracking change in one person: baseline at step one, then rescans at check-ins, so a stalled scale with fat lost and muscle gained reads as the success it is.

Who Should Get a 3D Body Composition Scan?

A body composition scan suits almost anyone starting a weight, fitness or wellness program, which is why it is step one at Aspire. There are very few reasons not to have one.

01

Ideal Candidates for a 3D Body Composition Scan

  • Starting a program and wanting a baseline
  • Losing weight fast and tracking lean mass
  • Scale has stalled but clothes fit differently
  • Running a contouring course, measured
  • Training seriously, tracking fat and muscle
02

Who Should Wait or Avoid a Scan

  • Pregnancy, where estimates are not useful
  • Unable to stand unsupported for the scan
  • Active or recovering eating disorder
  • Wanting bone density, which needs DEXA
03

What We Confirm Before Your Scan

  • That you can stand for the full 30 to 40 seconds
  • That you are not pregnant
  • Whether you are mid-program, for the baseline
  • What you actually want measured
  • That fitted clothing is available

If your reason for wanting a scan is a specific medical question rather than program tracking, we will say so and arrange a telehealth visit with Impact Health Network licensed physicians. If the question is why your metabolism behaves the way it does, metabolic testing in Charlotte, NC may be the next step. Most clients get their scan as step one of the weight loss program in Charlotte, NC.

Clinical explanation of body composition scan limitations at Aspire Trim Clinic in Matthews, NC near Charlotte

Body Composition Scan Safety and Limitations

Optical scanning has no side effects: no radiation, no injection and no physical contact. What deserves honesty is what it measures well and where it falls short.

No Side Effects, Two Practical Requirements

Optical scanning uses infrared light to capture your body surface, with no radiation, no injection and no physical contact. You stand fully clothed in fitted garments for 30 to 40 seconds.

The only practical requirements are the ability to stand unsupported for the scan duration and clothing that does not obscure your actual surface contour, which is why loose garments are changed.

What the Scan Measures Well

Optical scanning derives body composition from surface geometry rather than measuring tissue directly, so absolute body fat percentage carries more uncertainty than a DEXA or four-component reference measurement.

What it does exceptionally well is track change in the same person under the same conditions, which is exactly what a program needs. Circumference measurements are highly reproducible and are the most reliable output.

Where It Falls Short and Who Should Wait

It estimates bone mass but does not measure bone mineral density, so anyone who needs a bone density assessment requires a DEXA scan elsewhere. Body composition estimates are not meaningful in pregnancy.

Clients with an active or recovering eating disorder should involve their own clinician before regular measurement, since frequent body data can be counterproductive. See how it works at Aspire Trim for where the scan sits in the wider process.

Body Composition Scan Questions, Answered

Before your scan

How much does a body composition scan cost in Charlotte, NC?

Your scan is included in your free consultation, with no obligation to buy anything afterwards. It is step one of every program, and rescans at scheduled check-ins are part of the program rather than a separate line. Exact investment for any program is discussed at your free consultation after your scan, and Cherry, PatientFi and Klarna payment plans are available.

Why is the scan step one at Aspire Trim Clinic?

Because a plan built on a guess fails. The scan gives your coach a baseline for body fat, lean mass and 33 measurements before any goal is set, so the goal-setting session, nutrition targets and check-in schedule all rest on real numbers. It is the first step in how it works at Aspire, and every rescan is measured against it.

How long does the scan take?

About 30 to 40 seconds on the platform, with results in under 2 minutes. Including changing into fitted clothing, the scan itself and a proper debrief on what the numbers mean, budget around twenty minutes for the whole visit. You get your results in the same visit rather than waiting for a report to arrive later.

Is a Styku scan the same as a DEXA scan?

No, and we are deliberate about saying so. DEXA uses X-ray absorptiometry to measure fat, lean tissue and bone mineral density directly. Styku is optical, deriving composition from body surface geometry with no radiation. Styku reports the same core metrics and is excellent for tracking change over time; DEXA is better for absolute measurement and is the only option for bone mineral density.

How accurate is 3D optical body scanning?

Peer-reviewed research on commercial 3D optical scanners, including Styku, shows high concordance with DXA for fat mass and fat-free mass, and comparisons against four-component reference models support their use for tracking change. Absolute body fat percentage carries more uncertainty than a laboratory method, while circumference measurements are highly reproducible. That combination is exactly what program tracking needs.

What do I wear for the scan?

Fitted clothing, so the scanner captures your actual body contour rather than fabric. Close-fitting athletic wear works well, and we have a changing space. Loose clothing produces inaccurate measurements, which is the one thing that genuinely degrades the result, so we will ask you to change if needed.

How often will I be rescanned?

At scheduled check-ins through your program, typically every six weeks across a 12 week plan. That interval is long enough for real change to accumulate and short enough to catch a problem early, particularly lean mass loss during rapid weight loss. Scanning weekly produces noise rather than information, so your coach sets the rescan dates with you.

Will the scan tell me if I am losing muscle?

It tracks lean mass, which is the closest practical measure and the most important thing to watch during rapid weight loss. If lean mass is falling between scans, your coach changes protein targets and resistance training before you lose strength you will want back. That single use case justifies the whole process.

My scale has stalled. Can the scan explain why?

Often, yes. A stalled scale with falling circumference and steady or rising lean mass is progress the scale cannot show, and the scan makes that visible. If the numbers truly are flat, your coach looks at pacing, protein and sleep, and may suggest genetic and metabolic testing. Read more on a weight loss plateau.

Can the scan show whether my body contouring worked?

Yes, and this is one of its best uses. Circumference measurements are the most reproducible output, so a laser lipo course or an Emsculpt Neo series can be judged on real numbers rather than on how someone says your waist looks. We scan before the course and at check-ins through it.

Do I need to be on a program to get scanned?

No. Plenty of people come for the free consultation and scan and nothing else, particularly people training seriously who want to track fat and muscle separately. You will get the debrief and the numbers, and nobody will pressure you into a program afterwards. That is not how we run consultations.

What if my scan results are worse than I expected?

That happens, and it is more useful than a comfortable number. A baseline is a starting point, not a verdict, and the debrief focuses on what it means for the plan rather than on making you feel bad. Clients consistently tell us we educate and never judge, and this is where that matters most.
